The former Brazilian leader has been detained after authorities found he posed a serious risk of fleeing while under domestic detention.

The one-time leader was convicted of plotting a military coup in the ninth month and given more than over two decades in prison, but he was staying under home detention pending appeals.

High Court Judge Alexandre de Moraes said the action to imprison the 70-year-old politician was a precautionary step after fresh information came to light.

This encompassed trying to remove his electronic bracelet and a call for a supporters' gathering that could facilitate a possible escape.

Legal Document Reveals Escape Risks

In a document approving the detention, the magistrate said information from the facility tracking his home detention suggested the one-time head of state's plan to remove the electronic ankle bracelet to secure accomplishment in his flight.

This, it said, would be assisted by the chaos caused by the protest called by his child.

His offspring, Flávio, who serves as a congressional representative, called for a gathering of his followers near Bolsonaro's home to take place on Saturday evening.

His son wrote on online platforms on the previous day: Do you plan to struggle for your homeland, or see it all from your phone there on your couch? I call on you to battle with us."

He said the gathering would be so followers could offer prayers for his health and for the return of democracy in our nation."

Embassy Asylum Concerns

Part of Justice Moraes's ruling was the potential of Bolsonaro's transfer to foreign missions near the residence, considering that the inquiries revealed a record of organizing to request asylum through a embassy office", a statement said.

The judicial paperwork underscores that the United States embassy in the federal district, the capital city, is located around 8 miles from Bolsonaro's home.

Global Responses

The former president's legal troubles have generated frustration from fellow right-wing populist US President President Trump, leading him to enact a half-rate duty on Brazilian product imports.

He is being kept in a federal law enforcement building in Brazil's capital city and will undergo a detention review on Sunday.

Recent Judicial Appeals

It was only on the previous day that the his legal team asked the Top Court to permit him to complete his entire prison term under house arrest, with tracking devices.

They also petitioned that he be permitted to exit his dwelling for medical care, saying he demanded ongoing care for lung conditions and other illnesses.

Background on Conviction

The former president was found guilty of heading a conspiracy aimed at maintaining his control after he was defeated in the presidential race to his left-wing rival, Lula.

Top judicial officials said that he knew of a plot which encompassed plans to murder Lula and his running partner, his vice-presidential candidate, and to detain and kill Justice Moraes - the Supreme Court justice who has been presiding over his judicial proceedings.

The scheme was prevented because it couldn't obtain the support of the army and air force commanders. Lula was inaugurated without problem on January 1st, 2023.

But a following week, on 8 January, thousands of his followers stormed and vandalised public facilities in the capital, Brazil's capital.

The security forces intervened and around fifteen hundred individuals were arrested.

The judges found that the rioters had been incited by him whose strategy, they said, was for the national armed forces to intervene, restore order and bring him back to power.

At the moment, Bolsonaro's lawyers called the decades-long sentence "absurdly excessive.

He was also barred from campaigning for office until 2060 - a decade minus two years after the end of his sentence.

The one-time head of state called the legal proceedings a political persecution and said it was designed to prevent him participating in the next presidential race.
