Conservative responses to the partial disclosure of files related to the Epstein case have been mixed, with certain supporters of the previous administration pointing out the noticeable appearance of Bill Clinton and additional Democrats in photographs, while others lamented how extensive redactions cast Donald Trump and GOP members in a unfavorable light.
Justice Department Defends Redactions with Strong Hyperbole
Administration officials justified the redactions with intense hyperbole. “Never in American history has a Commander-in-Chief or the Justice Department been this open with the American people about such a delicate law enforcement issue,” declared Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche, who issued a six-page letter outlining the redaction procedure.
Concerns Raised by Redactions
While the former president's identity and image are visible in portions of the materials, the extensive redactions prompt serious concerns about what may be concealed beneath them. Some Republicans immediately demanded increased openness.
“People are furious and walking away,” posted Republican Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene.
Via a social media post, GOP Congressman Thomas Massie said the censorship break the law, and implied that a future Congress may move to remove the Attorney General, Pam Bondi, for that violation. “Unfortunately, today’s file dump grossly does not adhere to both the spirit and the wording of the law,” he continued.
A Faction of Rightwing Figures Swing Behind the Disclosure
However, a segment of rightwing pundits and former President allies came out strongly in support of the Justice Department's actions.
The disclosed materials—from a justice department run by close Trump associate Pam Bondi—contains hundreds of documents that are entirely censored, and numerous of the individuals depicted in photographs have their faces obscured.
But a few do not, featuring prominent individuals like Clinton, entertainer Michael Jackson, and academic Noam Chomsky. The inclusion of Clinton, especially, enabled certain conservative voices to launch the offensive.
“It’s quite ironic how the political left wrongly accused President Trump of being a pedophile, only for the administration's Justice Department to unveil Epstein files that depict Bill Clinton skinny dipping with a pedophile,” wrote conservative activist Laura Loomer.
“New documents show Bill Clinton shirtless in a hot tub with a female that is other than his wife Hillary Clinton,” wrote attorney Rogan O’Handley. “There’s only 1 reason Epstein would take pictures of a US President with a girl in a jacuzzi: Blackmail.”
Clinton Spokesperson Releases Response
Clinton has repeatedly stated he knew of zero criminal activity by Epstein and has never been alleged to have engaged in any misconduct. “The administration has not been concealing these documents for months only to dump them at the last minute on a Friday to shield Bill Clinton,” Clinton’s spokesperson Angel Ureña stated in a comment.
“This is about protecting officials from future revelations, or from information they will try and conceal forever. Therefore they can release as many grainy 20-plus-year-old photos as they want, but this is not about Bill Clinton. Never has, not ever be,” the statement added.
Overall Conservative Comment Remains Muted
However, broader discourse on the political right was comparatively subdued following the release, particularly when juxtaposed against the loud calls for transparency that came before the legislative vote to pass a bill mandating the documents' release.
Loomer, who not long ago accepted press credentials at the Defense Department, had been among the most vocal proponents for a full release. In February, she chastised the administration generally and Bondi specifically after a group of rightwing personalities were provided physical binders of materials that contained little new data.
