European Union Might Retaliate to ‘Unjustified’ US Visa Bans, Official States

The European Union might “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it deems “unjustified” visa bans issued by the United States against five European individuals involved in combating digital hatred and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.

European Leaders Decry US Move as ‘Coercion’

European leaders such as Emmanuel Macron accused Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, following the visa restrictions were placed on individuals that were at the heart of campaigns to enact laws governing US-based technology firms.

“For too long, European activists have spearheaded organised efforts to pressure American platforms to suppress American viewpoints they disagree with,” stated a senior US official in a social media post. “The current administration will not stand for such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”

Widespread Condemnation From EU Nations

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported France in criticizing the move.

The bans were enacted on Tuesday against an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the EU’s digital governance law, along with four anti-disinformation campaigners, from two in Germany and two in the UK.

A Deepening Dispute Regarding Governance

The DSA is seen by US officials as a form of censorship, while European leaders argue the regulations are essential to combat hate speech and disinformation.

This disagreement threatens to become a facet of a much broader existing political and ideological clash involving the current US administration and Europe.
