Around fifty cars have been marked with what seems to be human blood in the German municipality of Hanau in proximity to Frankfurt, police confirm police.
Cars, building surfaces and mailboxes were defaced, in some cases with prohibited symbols, they reported in a official communication.
Officers state they were contacted in the late hours on Wednesday, when a individual noticed that a automobile in the Lamboy area of Hanau had been smeared with a reddish substance.
The liquid had been placed in the shape of a Nazi symbol, they stated.
Law enforcement then located multiple other smeared cars and residential walls in the surrounding area.
Swastikas are illegal in Germany under regulations banning the public exhibition of Nazi-era symbols.
Law enforcement report initial examinations indicate the substance was probably human bodily fluid.
"Currently there is no lead as to where it came from; authorities are currently not informed of any injuries in relation with the incident," they added.
Local authorities stated they were trying "to unravel the case" and have appealed to the residents for information.
A senior political figure stated the incident rendered him stunned and required to be addressed promptly.
"This event hits the core of Hanau and revives the trauma of the far-right violent incident half a decade ago," he stated on social media, mentioning the murder of nine individuals by a gunman focusing on people of foreign heritage in five years prior.
